Natural Insect Repellent
Before I begin, let me first say that this is something I came up with myself.  I am not a scientist or medical professional.

Like so many others, I have high sensitivity and allergies to many chemicals, including Skin-So-Soft by Avon (which is one of the most commonly used and effective repellents).  As a wildlife photographer, I spend a lot of time in the woods and high grassy areas - a perfect breeding ground for ticks!

Fortunately I am one of those people who do not tend to get attacked by mosquitos but I did keep finding ticks on me so decided I needed to find
something that would work that I was not allergic too.

Having a basic idea of some essential oils, I figured that Eucalyptus and Tea Tree are not native to my area (the Northeastern US) and that most insects found the scents not pleasant.  Mixing them together in a spray bottle then adding water, I have found that by spraying this on myself and my clothes has so far managed to keep ticks off of me.

One more disclaimer - since every individual is different, this may or may not work for you.   Also, regions are different.  This has only been tried in Southeastern PA so far.  IF you do try this, it may take a few tries for you to get the right combination for you.  When Googling about this, I did find a few other people have mixed their own repellent using the same essential oils combined with a few others.

My Formula:

      1 glass spray bottle
      Tea Tree Essentiall Oil
      Eucalytpus Essential Oil
      Hot tap water

Fill the spray bottle halfway with equal parts of Tea Tree and Eucalyptus.  Fill the rest with hot tap water and shake.  That's it.

One site suggested instead of water, using Olive Oil - which will make it stay on the skin better.

Again, please let me clearly state that I am NOT an expert.  This is only based upon what has worked for me.

Essential Oils are only to be used externally.  Some people may be allergic to certain oils so test all oils on a small part of your skin before using.
